What is turning?
In the precise machining technique known as CNC turning, a cutter makes contact with the rotating workpiece to remove material. That is, motion in a single direction or a curve, not rotation. Turning operations are used to create axisymmetric, rotational parts with a variety of features, including holes, grooves, threads, tapers, different diameter steps, and even curved surfaces. There are four primary types of turning:
- Step turning produces two surfaces with a sharp difference in diameter. The last component resembles a step.
- During taper turning, the angled motion between the workpiece and a cutting tool causes a ramp transition between the two surfaces with differing diameters.
- In contour turning, the cutting process follows the path axially along a predetermined geometry. To make the desired curves in the workpiece, a contouring tool must make several passes.
- The chamfer turning process, like step turning, generates an angled transition of a square edge across two surfaces with distinct turned diameters.
